Obituary for Vincent Alexander Unroe

Vincent Alexander Unroe, age 85, of 445 Verge Street, Clifton Forge passed away Monday, September 28, 2009 at his residence, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born on April 10, 1924 to proud parents, the late William and Maggie Unroe of Iron Gate, Virginia. On December 29, 1945, he married his dear companion, Margaret Noel Unroe, with whom he shared sixty-one years of love and happiness. Together, they lovingly and proudly raised five children. Vincent served in the United States Army during World War II. He retired from CSX Transportation, where he worked as a motor car operator and on the Maintenance of Way. His greatest joy in life was that of having a family and being an active part of their daily lives, helping them to learn and grow. He loved working his garden and sharing the harvest. He also enjoyed fishing, collecting and sharing quarters, and was a true Redskin fan. His greatest gift was his service to others. Vincent was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Covington, where he was an active servant of our Lord. Surviving Vincent are two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Martha Unroe of Clifton Forge and David and Brenda Unroe of Roanoke; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Billy Williams, Mary K. and Willis Nichols, and Julie and Mark Nicely, all of Clifton Forge; one brother, Harmon Unroe of Kent, OH; two sisters, Stella Lowman of Clifton Forge and Rita Unroe of Iron Gate; four sisters-in-law, Nancy Unroe of Iron Gate, and Nora Webb, Frances Mahaney, and Loretta Putnam, all of Clifton Forge; twelve grandchildren, David Wayne and Anita Unroe, Ami Jo and Brian Hale, Alice Propper, Chris and Christy Unroe, Heather and Mark Bowman, April Nicely, Austin Nichols, Amanda Nichols, Tamara Caldwell, Stephanie Carter, Tina Brady, and Darrel Caldwell; ten great grandchildren, Keaton Unroe, Dalton Unroe, Steven Hale, Kasey Hale, Callie Hale, Alexandra Propper, Lindsey Propper, Lolann Propper, Brandon Bowman, Trevor Bowman; a former daughter-in-law, Carol Sue Persinger and husband Grover; special loving friends and neighbors, P.C. and Birdie Curtis; and an abundance of nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret N. Unroe; four brothers, Carl Unroe, Lewis Unroe, Garland Unroe, and Frank Unroe; and two sisters , Hallie Unroe Bliss and Mildred Unroe Campbell. A funeral service to honor his life will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Elder Basil Sampson officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. Vincent's nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:30 PM at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at his residence on Verge Street.
