Obituary for Joseph Allen "Joe" Furry

Joseph Allen "Joe" Furry
Joseph Allen "Joe" Furry, age 91, of 1209 Hamilton Avenue, Clifton Forge, Virginia died Monday, June 8, 2015 at the residence of his daughter, 1120 Madison Avenue, Clifton Forge. Joe was born March 12, 1924 in Clifton Forge to the late Reuel Samuel and Rosa Lee "Minnie" Fridley. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1948 and the United States Navy Reserve from 1948 to 1963. He was an engineer for CSX Transportation, retiring after 33 years, as well as a property surveyor. He was a longstanding member and deacon of the Clifton Forge Baptist Church, where he faithfully sang in the choir. He loved to show his love of God through song and always said he was "making a joyful noise". Joe loved our Lord Jesus and earned the jewels in his crown by living and teaching the way to our salvation. He said to all "Jesus is Lord" and lived close to the cross, serving as an interim pastor at White Rock Gap Community Church for a number of years. He was a former member of the Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge # 166 A.F. & A. M., the Alleghany Royal Arch Chapter # 24 of the Royal Arch Masons, and the Alleghany Commandry # 23. He was also a former member of the Kazim Shriners A.A.O.N.M.S. of Roanoke, the Clifton Forge Shrine Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Annie Pauline Mason, Catherine Paitsel, Thelma Louise Waters, Nellie Juanita Wilcher, and Ruby Lee Stogdale; and two brothers, Robert L. Furry and Charles E. Furry. He is survived by a daughter, Linda D. Furry Barron of Clifton Forge; a son, David K. Furry and wife Wanda Mae of Clifton Forge; a sister, Margarett Golden Fields of Reisterstown, MD; a former wife, Elizabeth Clendenen of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Erik Furry, Heather Nicole Furry, Jessica K. Cooper, Lisa Dawn Barron and Richard R. Barron II; eleven great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend J. Glenn Linthicum officiating . Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Graveside Military Rites will be conducted by members of the Burnside-Carpenter VFW Post 4299. Pallbearers will be Wayne Stogdale, Richard Terrell, Melvin W. Mason, Erik T. Furry, Richard Reid Barron II, Pastor Nathan Smith and Ronnie Wright. Wilton Stogdale will serve as an honorary pallbearer. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Clifton Forge Baptist Church, 511 McCormick Blvd, P.O. Box 121, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
