Daniel Thomas "Dan" Jones Jr.
Daniel Thomas “Dan” Jones, Jr., age 84, of 1804 Oakland Drive, Selma, Virginia died Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at The Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation Center in Low Moor. Dan was born May 8, 1932 in Washington D.C. to the late Daniel Thomas Jones, Sr. and Eleanor Turner Jones. He retired as Master Sergeant from the United States Marine Corp after having served from 1947 until 1967, and during The Vietnam War. He received a battlefield commission and was promoted to Second Lieutenant and retired as a First Lieutenant. He was a tugboat pilot for AEP from 1972 until 1994. Dan was very active in the community. He was a member of the Curtis A. Smith VFW Post 1033 and the Selma Fire Department, was a lay speaker for Walton Memorial U.M.C., Iron Gate U.M.C. and Longdale U.M.C., instructed CPR classes for the American Red Cross, assisted with the Blood Mobile, and delivered for the Meals on Wheels program. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Thomas Jones III; a sister, Mildred Jones; a brother, George Jones; and a grandson, Ryan Jones. He is survived by his wife, Geneva E. Jones of Selma; a daughter, Eleanor Bush and husband Gary of Hopewell; a son, Ernest W. Jones and wife Ellen of Clifton Forge; two sisters, Shirley Taylor of Hopewell and Louise Walker of Pennsylvania; a brother, Gordon Louis Jones of California; his sisters- and brothers-in-law, Rachel C. Higgins, Shirley C. Adams, Emmett Shaffer, Charlie Shaffer, and C. H. Cramer; seven grandchildren, Ernest Jones and wife Jennifer of Colorado, Stacey Baxter and husband Emmanuel of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Anya Tyson of Clifton Forge, Susan “Marie” Morgan and husband Chris of Dinwiddie, Benjamin Bush of Hopewell, Christine “Christy” Vaughan and husband Phillipp of Carson, and Roman Bush and wife Jesica of Quinton; fifteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Bill Bearden and Reverend Mike Warren officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by members of the Curtis A. Smith VFW Post 1033. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Nicely Funeral Home, and other times at the residence, 1804 Oakland Drive, Selma, VA.
