Obituary for George Elwood Mays

George Elwood Mays, age 90, of 108 Howard Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Thursday, February 8, 2018 at his residence. He was born November 4, 1927 in Clifton Forge to the late George Lewis and Mary Alice Stinnett Mays. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was a retired Brakeman and Conductor for CSX Transportation. He was a member of the United Transportation Union and the Central United Methodist Church, which was his life. He belonged to the Men’s Bible Class, served on the Board of Trustees, the Finance Committee, and the Kitchen Committee, and was Sunday School Superintendent and Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Eubanks; a brother, Gordon Mays; and a nephew, Eddie Mays.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Viola Ragland Mays of Clifton Forge; a daughter, Vicki Price and husband Gary of Clifton Forge; a granddaughter, Tiffany Gutshall and husband Coleman of Hickory, NC; a great granddaughter, Madeline Gutshall; a number of nieces, including two special nieces, Patricia Bates and Betty Laing; a special friend, Bobby Clindinst; and his friends at The Low Moor Country Store. A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11:00 AM in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge with Reverend Lynn Wright officiating. Interment will immediately follow. The family will receive friends anytime at the residence, 108 Howard Street, Clifton Forge. Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge is handling arrangements.
