Mabel Catherine Gray Hughes, age 83, of 324 King George Ave SW, Roanoke, Virginia died Thursday, June 16, 2011 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke. She was born March 26, 1928 in Nicholas County, West Virginia to the late Gilbert and Nancy Acord Gray. A homemaker throughout her life, She was a former member of the Clifton Forge Rescue Squad Auxiliary, a former member of the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, and a former member of the Ben Salem Presbyterian Church in Buena Vista, where she taught Sunday School for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Heber "Herb" Hughes, Jr.; a sister, Louise Pauley; and a brother, "Little Sherman" Gray. She is survived by two daughters, Jan Cash of Roanoke and her husband Harry of Hampton, and Judy Underwood and husband Ronnie of Clifton Forge; a sister, Blanche Johnson of Hugheston, WV; a brother, Ray Elmer "Buck" Gray of Yellow Springs, WV; three grandsons, Donnie "Binky" Underwood and wife Jeanine of Keezletown, Rob Weikle and wife Kerri of Montvale, and Ronnie "RW" Underwood and wife Stacy of Cary, NC; four great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews; and her beloved cat Zachery John. In keeping with her wishes, her body has been cremated. A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 6:00 PM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Glenn Clements and Mrs. Hughes' grandson, Donnie Underwood officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday, from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM, at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at the home of Judy and Ronnie Underwood, 2308 Benson Street, Clifton Forge, VA. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Clifton Forge Rescue Squad Auxiliary, PO Box 419, Clifton Forge, Virginia 24422 or to the Alleghany Humane Society, PO Box 60, Low Moor, VA 24457.
