Obituary for Charles Patrick O'Brien (Fuzzy)

Charles Patrick "Fuzzy" O'Brien, age 86, of 633 Roxbury Street, Clifton Forge died Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at his residence, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 1, 1925 in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Charles Joseph and Alice Hanifan O'Brien. He served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the USS Block Island during the naval battle in which it sank on May 29, 1944. He was a retired machinist for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and a member of the International Association of Machinists. He was of the Catholic faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Nicely; a brother-in-law, Richard Nicely; and two sons-in-law, Paul Clark and Randy George. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Richards O'Brien of Clifton Forge; four daughters, Patricia Vance and husband Doug of Roanoke, Mary George of Covington, Cathy Tucker and husband John of Clifton Forge, and Stella Clark of Clifton Forge; seven grandchildren, Mary Johnson and husband Kenny, Derrick George, Christopher George, Joyce Nicely and husband Jamie, Jonathan Tucker, Rusty Clark and wife Christin, and Landon Clark and wife Leanna; seven great grandchildren, Logan, Austin, Jereme, Patrick, MacKenzie, Chase, and Isabella; and his special buddies, Brooke Morris and "Fi Fi". A Christian wake service will be celebrated on Friday at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Louis Benoit officiating. Entombment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park Mausoleum, Low Moor. The grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by members of the Burnside-Carpenter VFW Post 4299 and the Curtis A. Smith VFW Post 1033. The grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 633 Roxbury Street, Clifton Forge, VA. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice Volunteers, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
