Obituary for Clara Dameron

Mrs. Clara Matheney Dameron, age 94, went to be with the Lord, on Friday, January 18, 2019, at Richfield Healthcare Community in Salem. Clara was born on January 7, 1925 in Nimrod Hall, Bath County, Virginia to the late Mary I. and William B. Matheney. She was the fourth child in a family of eight. She was predeceased by her husbands, Orvalle Warren Lawrence and Allen Gayner Dameron; brothers, John Matheney, Bernard Matheney, Garland Matheney; and sisters, Ruby Downey, Evelyn McComb, and Ramona Matheney. Clara spent her lifetime in the traditional family log cabin and moved in later years to Salem to be closer to her children. Well known as the family historian, Clara had a scrap book for each of her children and could recite the family history and news of Nimrod Hall for generations. Clara would quickly tell you that her greatest accomplishments were her children. She took great pride preparing meals and running an efficient household in support of her large family. Clara was the consummate “Granny” and all the grands, great grands, and extended family grands were treated with love and affection. Clara is survived by her sister, Shirley and husband Charlie Dodd of Clifton Forge; sister-in-law, Polly Dameron Sligh; and a special family friend, Rosa (Bunchie) Scott. Also surviving are her eight children, Ralph Lawrence (Jane) of Greensboro, NC, Phyllis Radford (Bobby deceased) of Salem, Art Lawrence (Debbie) of Daleville; Emmett Lawrence (Sue) of Montvale, David Lawrence (Betty) of Boones Mill, Mary Parr (David deceased) of Roanoke, Andrew Dameron (Loretta) of New Hope, and Bessie Dameron (Pam) of Salem. She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren, sixteen great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 21, 2019 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Mike Rollins officiating. Interment will follow at Horeb Baptist Church Cemetery on Route 42 in Nimrod Hall, Bath County. Pallbearers will be selected from the grandsons attending the service. The family will visit with friends on Monday afternoon from 12:00 PM until the time of the service at Nicely Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Horeb Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 216 Nimrod Drive, Millboro, VA 24460.
