Obituary for Shelbia Bayne

Shelbia Jean Hanshaw Bayne, age 77, of 104 Ferrol Avenue, Clifton Forge, Virginia died Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at LewisGale Hospital – Alleghany, Low Moor.

She was born March 28, 1941 in Zenith, West Virginia to Beulah Bennett Hanshaw Patterson and the late Virgil Hanshaw, Sr. She was a graduate of the Chesapeake and Ohio School of Nursing and retired after many years of service at the C & O Hospital and Alleghany Regional Hospital. She taught nursing at the University of Virginia, and was a former Director of Nursing at Liberty House Nursing Home. She was also instrumental in the opening of the Respiratory Therapy department at Alleghany Regional Hospital. Shelbia loved all music, and was an extremely gifted musician, playing the organ, piano, accordion, and auto harp. She grew up singing and playing in the Hanshaw Gospel Family. She was a member of the Clifton Forge Baptist Church, enjoyed arts and crafts, especially painting, and loved owls.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Elwood Bayne in 2014, a brother, Virgil Hanshaw, Jr., and a sister, Madonna Hepler.

Her mother, Beulah Patterson of Fairlea, WV survives her, as well as six nieces and nephews, Marcia Navidi-Kasmai, Carla Abate, Meade Hepler, Greg Bayne, Cindy Brooks, and Teresa Nicely, five great nieces and great nephews, Jarred Brooks, Lindsey Brooks, Casey Witt, Corey Bailey, and Cailie Abate, and a brother-in-law, Carlos Hepler.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 1, 2019 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend J. Glenn Linthicum officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be Greg Bayne, Corey Bailey, Casey Witt, Hayden Kay, Meade Hepler, and Chappy Morris. The family will receive friends on Friday afternoon from 12:30 PM until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, or the Mayo Clinic.
