Obituary for John Lawrence Uarich Jr.

John Lawrence Uarich Jr.
John Lawrence Uarich, Jr, 86, of Powhatan, Virginia went home to the Lord on Saturday, July 13, 2019.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. Uarich Sr., and Margaret Dereweki Uarich; his beloved wife, Constance Tingler Uarich; and grandson, Benjamin F. Jones.

John was proud of his heritage as a first generation American. His father’s family immigrated from the former Yugoslavia region of Croatia in the early 1900’s. He served in the US Army during the Korean War, being stationed in Panama. He was a founding member of the Covington Church of Christ and carried out the first baptism in the new building. He was an early member of the Covington area Kiwanis Club in the early 1960’s.

John worked for Hercules for many years in Covington, Virginia, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, Terre Haute, Indiana, and Covington, Georgia. He retired from Hercules and moved to Bristol, Virginia where he worked for Camac for a number of years. After retiring from there, John and his wife, Connie settled in the Richmond area.

John had many hobbies and was very active. He enjoyed woodworking and gifting his family with quilt racks, shelves, stools and other items that he created. He enjoyed making ceramic figures, and creating beautiful decorative stained cut glass pieces. He loved watching sports, especially his favorite teams, The Pittsburg Steelers and Pittsburg Pirates. He was an avid reader and gardener.

He will be greatly and sadly missed by his daughters, Pamela L. Rhoney (William) of Midlothian, Linda M. Jones (Benney) of Buena Vista, Laura A. Campbell (Jay) of Covington; grandchildren, Brittany Rhoney, Jonathan Rhoney, Cameron Rhoney, Moriah Jones Barger (Tommy), Hayley Campbell, Jesse Campbell; great grandchildren, Christian Barger, Matthew Barger, Benjamin Seth Barger, and Jaxon Asher Campbell who is expected to arrive any day. He will also be greatly missed by his aunt and close friend, Millie Sabo; special cousin, Susan Sabo; and a number of cousins, old friends, and his beloved dog, and constant companion, Duchess.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 19, 2019 at 12:00 Noon in the Chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Pastor Ralph Coleman officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by members of the Curtis A. Smith VFW Post # 1033. The family will receive friends from 11:00AM until time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, 1700 MacCorkle Ave, SE, Third Floor, Charleston, WV 25314.
