Condolence From: Col. Jeffrey Allen,USAF Retired
Condolence: America has lost one of its most prominent members of the greatest generation. Serving in WWII, Bobby, joined the U.S Army on May 21, 1945, served as a Sergeant in the 18th Infantry Regiment, and was a proud part of “The Big Red One”. He later guarded the war criminals at the Nuremberg trials. Bobby loved to tell the story of speaking with and getting to know Herman Goering, as one of the war crimes prisoners he guarded. Goering was a German political and military leader as well as one of the most powerful figures in the Hitler's government, which ruled Germany from 1933 to 1945. Goering amassed vast power and political capital to become the second most powerful man in Germany in WWII. He was appointed commander-in-chief of the Luftwaffe (German Air Force), a position he held until the final days of the regime. Bobby returned from the war and his military service, to work in the C&O System maintenance yard in Clifton Forge as a machinist, eventually reaching full retirement from the railroad. Active in his church and the community, Bobby so loved and cherished his family and friends. My wife and I will dearly miss him. What a fabulous American and great friend!
