Obituary for Harry Clark
Harry James Clark, husband of Millie Watts Clark, passed away at his home in Clifton Forge, VA on May 6, 2020 at the age of 74 with his family by his side.
Harry was born in the C&O Hospital in Clifton Forge on May 10, 1945 to the late Matilda “Tillie” Rose Copper Clark and Basil Clark of Clifton Forge. Harry spent his first few years in Goshen, VA before his family moved to Clifton Forge.
A graduate of Clifton Forge High School Class of 1963, Harry joined the United States Army. He trained as a medic and a paratrooper, jumping out of perfectly good airplanes. Harry continued his training becoming a member of the US Special Forces, the Green Berets.
After his time in service to his country, he went to work for the C&O Railway. He started at the shops in Clifton Forge. He later became a clerk working at Goshen, Balcony Falls, Marlinton, WV and Durbin, WV. He went to engineer’s school and became an engineer running trains from Clifton Forge to Richmond. He retired in 2005 from CSX with 36 years of service to the Railway. After retirement he spent time on his own model railroad layout, picnicking, swimming, canoeing and fishing on Big River at Goshen and spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Barry Hyler.
In addition to Millie, his wife of 51 years, Harry is survived by four children; James Alan Clark and friend Brook Tidwell of Newport News, Sarah Clark Hyler of Clifton Forge, Debbie Clark of Clifton Forge and Joanna Clark Thornton of Newport News; six grandchildren, Logan Hyler, Marleyna Hyler, Alexis Clark, Hampton Clark, Jareko Thornton and Waverly Campbell; four brothers, Basil Joe Clark and Shirley of Nelson County, George William Clark and wife Joyce of Covington, Alan Clark and wife Barbara of Clarksville and David C. Clark and wife Susan of Louisa; a sister, Elizabeth Nell Clark Wilson and husband Donald of Clarksville; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Loan and husband Earl of Clifton Forge, and Sherry Watts of Clifton Forge; three special friends, Larry Hayslett, Mark Harvey and Butch Robinson; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins in Texas, Nebraska, Florida, North Carolina and Virginia. The family would like to give special thanks to Autumn Anderson of Mountain Regional Hospice for the care she gave.
In keeping with his wishes his body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
