Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Powell-McDaniel (Nelson)
Mary Elizabeth Nelson Powell-McDaniel, age 91, of 4124 Sharon Lane, Clifton Forge, Virginia died Monday, June 8, 2020 at her residence.
She was born on September 12, 1928 in Clifton Forge, Virginia to the late John Holman Nelson and Anna Virginia Smith Nelson. She was a retired secretary for Clifton Forge Public Schools, a member of the Clifton Forge Junior Women’s Club, a member of Central United Methodist Church, the Gardens Club, and the Bridge Club. She enjoyed the Cowpasture River, gardening, taking care of her yard, and spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Howard Lucas “Buddy” Powell and Loyd Arthur McDaniel; a grandson, Christopher Allen Hickman; a brother, Lawrence "Bones" Nelson; sisters, Margaret Russell and Ellen Healy.
She is survived by a daughter, Gayle Hickman and husband David of Richmond, Va; special adopted daughter, Ellen Thompson Essex of Hot Springs; granddaughter, Courtney Elizabeth Leaman and husband, Tyler of Richmond; and a number of beloved nieces and nephews.
In keeping with her wishes, her body has been cremated. There will be no memorial service held.
The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice Volunteers, PO Box 637, Clifton Forge, Virginia 24422 and to the American Heart Association, Mid Atlantic Affiliate, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060.
