Obituary for John "Johnny" Stinnett
John Clinton Stinnett, age 73, of 219 W. Ridgeway Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia died Tuesday, August 25 2020 at his residence.
Johnny was born April 3, 1947 in in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Elmer Jackson Stinnett and Frances Alice Kern Stinnett Duff. His parents had railroad connections dating back to the 1860's. His family moved to "Money Maker Hollow" in Alleghany County when he was 6 months of age. He and his parents lived in the railroad town of Gladstone part of the year, then back to Money Maker Hollow. He spent most of his life in Clifton Forge, attending Central High School and then Alleghany County High School the first year it opened. He left high school to join the Marine Corps and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1970, when he was wounded and flown by medivac out of Vietnam. While he was in the Marines, he was on the personal staff of Major General Metzer, Commanding General 3rd Marine Division. He served as a driver, body guard, server and bar tender. He also boxed while in the Marine Corps. He was the recipient of several awards, including the Purple Heart. After his tour of duty with the Marine Corps, he worked at NSA (National Security Agency) in Laurel, Maryland. He had top secret clearance and loved his job. He has enjoyed traveling around the world and has hitchhiked across 45 states. He also spent time doing pro fishing, playing tennis, and golfing 4-5 times a week. He had fond memories of fishing in Clifton Forge with his Grandpa. They would catch catfish in the creek then get hot dogs at "Triangle Bar". Later in life, he enjoyed tending his garden and sitting on his porch waving to friends as they passed his home.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Stinnett and a sister, Jackie Troilo.
He is survived by a sister, Frances Sanchez and husband Luis of Roanoke, a number of nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Elwood Deisher of Clifton Forge.
In keeping with his family’s wishes, his body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
