Obituary for Jean Elizabeth Ray
Jean Ray, age 66, affectionately known as “Dolly” of Roanoke Virginia (formerly of Covington); a loving mother, Mimi, sister, and aunt departed this life for eternal rest on Monday February 1, 2021.
She was born on December 27, 1954 in Clifton Forge to the late James and Dorothy Ray. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Iron Gate. She was a 1972 graduate of James River High School and received an Associate’s degree in Business from Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. Dolly had a kind soul and the love she had for her family was immeasurable. She would often be the first one to offer a helping hand to anyone in need. She enjoyed completing home improvement projects and gardening. Dolly was an avid sports fan cheering on the Virginia Tech Hokies, San Francisco 49ers, Boston Celtics, and most importantly her “super boy” Eli at all of his sporting events.
She is proceeded in death by her parents, grandparents, an infant sister Dorothy, and a special brother-in-law, Al Harvey.
She leaves to rejoice and cherish her memory two devoted daughters: Kirsha and Geena Ray and a beloved grandson Eli Ray Jones, all of Roanoke. Siblings; Virginia Harvey of Columbus, GA; James (Ava) Ray of Boones Mill, Valerie (Steve) Starkey of Iron Gate, and Betty (George) Thompson of Buchanan. Aunt Barbara Pierce of Iron Gate. Nieces and nephews; Keisha (Donte) Johnson of Covington, GA, Troi (Jenny) Harvey of Columbus, GA, Ty Ray of Roanoke, Courtney (Kevin) Dudding, Latrice Ray, and Jeffrey Davis all of Covington and a number of great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to express their many thanks for the prayers, cards and calls during this difficult time of bereavement with special thanks to the nurses and staff of 6 Mountain ICU at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
A private service will be held in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge. Friends may visit at the funeral home during normal business hours. In her honor, the family suggests memorial tributes take form of contributions to the American Stroke Association (www.stroke.org).
