Obituary for Betty Walthall

Betty June Phillips Walthall, age 86, of 2704 Valley Ridge Road, Covington, Virginia died Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at LewisGale Hospital – Alleghany, Low Moor.
Betty was born June 14, 1934 in Glen Ray, West Virginia to the late Vernon and Harriett Shanklin Phillips. She was a graduate of the Charleston Nursing Program and a retired Registered Nurse for Alleghany Regional Hospital. She had over 30 years of hospital experience which also included Summers County Hospital, the former Alleghany Memorial Hospital, and the former Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where she was an active member of the choir, and belonged to the Retired Nurses Association. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, birdwatching, and playing cornhole, and was an avid West Virginia University sports fan.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Edward Walthall, a daughter, Kim Hipes, three brothers, and a sister.
She is survived by two daughters, Pam Crance (Linnie) and Sharon Walthall, both of Clifton Forge; a son, Phillip Walthall (Gaye) of Vincennes, IN; a son-in-law, David Hipes of Clifton Forge; two sisters, Peggy Ballengee of Alderson, WV and Harriett “Cookie” Brown (Richard) of Caldwell, WV; a twin brother, Billy Jo Phillips (Ann) of Alderson, WV; 7 grandchildren, Drew Hipes (Ashley), Emily Hipes, Jessika Crance, Tyler Crance (Ashlie), Sarah Crance, Bailey Walthall, and Mackenzie Walthall; five great grandchildren, Hunter Barron, Hannah Hipes, Hallie Hipes, Abigail Riley, and Bryson Hipes; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special dog “Annie”.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 17, 2021 at 11:00 AM in Temple Baptist Church, Covington, with Reverend Bill Hartsfield officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, and also on Monday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of service at Temple Baptist Church.
