Obituary for Barbara Wright Showalter

Barbara Jean Wright Showalter, age 75, formerly of Clifton Forge, Virginia passed away at her home in The Glebe, Daleville, Virginia on Wednesday, July 13, 2022.

She was born September 7, 1946 in Clifton Forge to the late Howard Westley Wright and Thelma Viola Zell Wright. She was a retired Registered Nurse for Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital, Alleghany Regional Hospital, and Community Hospital of Roanoke. She was a longtime member of Clifton Forge Baptist Church.

Barbara loved nursing and caring for patients and friends when they needed support. She enjoyed mentoring nurses just beginning their careers and was often recognized for her skill and compassionate manner. Barbara loved being home with her family. She could often be found feeding the local wildlife from her deck, napping with her cat, or being the official taste-tester for anything her husband cooked. Barbara loved classical music and as her memory began to slip away, it was something that brought her great peace.

Barbara will be remembered by those who knew her as someone who believed the best in people, someone who loved animals and who thought there was no place more beautiful than South West Virginia. She was so proud of her children and believed her only grandchild, Wyatt, was one of her greatest blessings. She cherished the title of “Grammy”.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Gary Leon Showalter; and three brothers, Howard E. “Bud” Wright, Ray M. Wright, and Donald Wayne Wright.
She is survived by a daughter, Erin Elizabeth Showalter-Nicely and husband, Hiawatha “Casey” Nicely of Bonsack; a son, Paul Howard Showalter of Williamsburg; a sister, Aileen W. Painter of Virginia Beach; a brother, Ronald W. Wright of Clifton Forge; one amazing grandson, Wyatt Hudson Nicely; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the amazing caregiving staff at The Glebe’s Chaplick Memorial Center for their steadfast dedication to Barbara as her memories faded. Also, they wish to thank the Good Samaritan Hospice team for giving Barbara such tender and respectful care in her last days.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 17, 2022 at 2:00 PM in Eagle Rock Baptist Cemetery, Eagle Rock with Dr. Tom Harvey officiating. Interment will immediately follow. The family will receive friends on Saturday afternoon from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge.
