Raymond Lynwood Claterbaugh, M.D., age 81, of Clifton Forge, Virginia died Sunday, July 31, 2022 at The Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Low Moor, Virginia.
Raymond was born January 30, 1941 in Clifton Forge to the late Raymond Lynwood Claterbaugh, Sr. and Louise Scruggs Claterbaugh. He was a graduate of the Clifton Forge High School class of 1958 and the Hampden- Sidney College class of 1962. He received his master’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1967 and his doctorate from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1972. He completed his residency at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and went on to serve his community as a widely respected physician from 1975 – 2006 in family practice and at the free clinic. He was a member of the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, the board of the First National Bank of Clifton Forge, the Fort Dickinson Hunt Club, and was a lifetime member of Cliftondale Country Club. Raymond loved hunting, fishing, and golf, and remained a Virginia Tech fan throughout his life.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an uncle, Lang Scruggs.
He is survived by a brother, Richard Claterbaugh and wife Pam of Botetourt County; two nephews, John Claterbaugh, and wife Erin, and Robert Claterbaugh; a great niece and great nephew, Meredith Claterbaugh and Andrew Claterbaugh; and longtime friend, Harold Smestad and his friend and coworker for many years, Emma Martin.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at 10:00 AM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Mr. Chris Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be Lawrence Wood, Steve Smestad, Harold Smestad, John Edmunds, Fred Randozzo, John Claterbaugh, Andrew Claterbaugh, and Dalton Nicely. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Nicely Funeral Home.
