Obituary for Sarah Wood Davis

Sarah Mae Wood Davis, 87, died Monday, August 8, 2022 at her home.
Born September 20, 1934 at Nimrod Hall, VA, she was a daughter of the late Frank M. and Mae M. Wood. A life long resident of Bath County, she graduated from Millboro High School and attended Radford College. Sarah and her husband of 62 years, Robert D. “Dewey” Davis, raised 5 children. They owned and operated Camp Nimrod for Girls, Vineyard Farms and Echo Valley Farm, where they farmed, raised cattle and horses. Sarah was an accomplished horse woman and loved all aspects of the horse world. She taught horseback riding to hundreds of children and adults. She was a successful trainer and coach on the Pony Club circuit in Virginia. In 2002 she was awarded the Southwest Virginia Hunter Jumper Association, Adult Sportsmanship award and in 2011 was inducted into the SWVHJA Hall of Fame. She was an equestrian instructor at Greenbrier College, WV and also Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. As owner of Camp Nimrod for Girls, she was the residential director and taught horseback riding to the campers. To many of these young girls, who became extended family, she was a life long mentor, and friend. She was also a life long member of Nimrod Hall Hunt Club.
She is survived by her husband, Dewey Davis and children: Susan Shrader Muehleck (Jim), Wesley Shrader (Sharon), Robert D. “Bob” Davis, Jr., Nora Howell and Georgia Tennant. Grandchildren Janie Shrader, Kelsey Neil, Thomas Shrader, Jason Muehleck, Matthew Muehleck, Tish Hamilton, Tina Hewitt, Luke Hewitt, Kelly Hewitt and 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. A sister, Frances Apistolas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Frank D. “Bo” Shrader and daughter Sarah Lewanne Davis.

A casual, outdoor celebration of life will be Saturday, August 13, 2:00 at The Camp, Vineyard Farm, 134 Vineyard Farm Rd, on Route 42, Millboro, VA.
