Obituary for Charles Ray Sprinkle
Charles “Ray” Sprinkle, age 73, of 85 Homestead Circle, Troutville, Virginia died Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at his residence.
Ray was born May 9, 1949 in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Charles Henry and Nora Virginia Hudgins Sprinkle. He became a licensed realtor in April of 1988, and began selling real estate with Firestone Real Estate. He moved to Boone and Co. in 1989, and was one of Botetourt County’s top producing agents throughout his 34 year career, continuing on as a partner with RE/MAX Allstars where he received many awards including induction into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame, the RE/MAX Career Achievement Award Winner, and a multi-time winner of RE/MAX Individual and Team Platinum Awards. In 1993, Ray began developing the Sommersby Community in Botetourt County along with John Griffin, longtime friend and business partner. He was very active in his community, serving on the Botetourt County School Board for 22 years, 10 of which he was Chairman. He served on the Bank of Fincastle board of directors for 48 years beginning in 1972 and was a member of the board of directors of First Bank from 2020 to present. Ray was an orchardist and owner of Sprinkle Orchards for most of his life. He was a longtime member and supporter of the apple industry, serving as board member of the Virginia Fruit Growers, chairman of the Virginia Apple Board, and president of the Virginia State Horticultural Society. As a man of faith, he attended Orchard Hills Church. Ray loved golf and was a member of the Ashley Plantation Country Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Sprinkle.
Ray is survived by his wife, Sandy Simpson Sprinkle of Troutville; a son, Chuck Sprinkle and wife Huma of Brooklyn, NY; a step daughter, Alana Averill of Clifton Forge; a step son, Challen Averill of Troutville; three grandchildren, Hayden Averill, Heidi Averill, and Naseem Sprinkle; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Donna and C.R. Nicely, Becky Carter, Butch and Brenda Simpson, Billy Simpson, and George Simpson; a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members; and many friends and coworkers, including his golf buddies who were like family.
In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated. A celebration of Ray’s life will be held at Ashley Plantation Country Club at a later date.
The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the League of Animal Protection, 603 Poor Farm Road, Fincastle, VA 24090.
