Obituary for Amory Mellen Jr.

Amory Mellen, Jr., formerly of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on December 11, 2022, in Warm Springs, VA. He was 92.

Mr. Mellen was born in Jacksonville, FL on July 4, 1930, the son of Amory Mellen and Vivian Fender Mellen. His grandparents were William Lon Fender and Texas Hagan Fender of Valdosta, GA and Charles Sanger Mellen and Katherine Livingston Mellen of Concord, MA and New York City. Mr. Mellen grew up Valdosta, GA and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following his graduation from UNC in 1950, Mr. Mellen moved to Winston-Salem, NC and joined McLean Trucking Company as a management trainee. He spent his career at McLean where he rose through various managerial positions until, in 1980, he was named McLean’s chairman and chief executive officer.

Mr. Mellen and Jane Maujer Pollock were married in 1952. They resided in Winston-Salem until 1988 when, following Mr. Mellen’s retirement from McLean, they made Warm Springs, VA their home. In Winston-Salem, Mr. Mellen was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry, and a member of Old Town Club where he served as president. He was active in the business community and served for many years on the board of directors of Wachovia Corporation.

After moving to Warm Springs he served on the board of the Virginia Hot Springs Corporation, on the vestry of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and was a founding member of Christ Church at Union Chapel (Anglican) where he also served on the vestry. He was an accomplished amateur golfer, enjoyed tennis, and traveled frequently in his later years.

Mr. Mellen was preceded in death by Jane Pollock Mellen, his wife of 64 years.

He is survived by his daughter Terrell Mellen McDermid and son-in-law John Fairbanks McDermid of Washington, DC, his son Amory Mellen, III and daughter-in-law Ann Hunnicutt Mellen of Millboro, VA, and two grandchildren, Terrell Elizabeth Mellen of Charlottesville, VA and Sarah Ann Mellen of Richmond, VA.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
