The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Alpha Averill can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Is that who I think it is?

What a wonderful lady. A true Gem of Alleghany County.  I remember walking into the store one day for lunch and Granny said come here a minute, I want to show you something.  We made our way over to the counter where she started thumbing through her guestbook.  I thought to myself, You have shown me this before and I have already signed it.  That wasn't what she wanted.  She came to the page she was looking for and said "Right there" as she pointed to a name.  I looked at it and immediately recognized the signature.  Apparently she had too.  She said the man had stopped in for lunch with his family on their way to Pittsburgh, PA. They were on their way to drop their son off at college.  She told me they had been there before, enjoyed their visit and stopped by again.  She gathered all this information, because there was no such thing as a stranger for her.  She looked at me with what seemed like the longest pause.  I think she wanted to see if I got it, and said "Is that who I think it is?"  I said he used to be an NFL player.  Her reply, "Are you sure?"  Yes ma'am, i replied,  I have a sports magazine at home with his signature and picture on the cover.  Can you bring in?, she wanted to know.  Absolutely, how could you possibly say no to granny.  The next day it was confirmed as she gazed at the cover and said that's him.  She even confirmed the signatures to be sure.  I said "Granny, you met Dan Marino"  She said "I know" matter of factly. "I just wanted to be sure.  He sure was a nice fellow."  I can only hope that the Hall of Famer realized what a Super Star he met that day, I know I did the first day that I had the privilege to have lunch with "Granny Averill'
