Benny Bennett Smith
Benny Bennett Smith, 82, passed on Sunday, February 5, 2017, in Mooresville, North Carolina, after a long and brave battle with dementia and Alzheimer’s. He was born in Clifton Forge, Virginia, to Ben and Mabel Bennett Smith. Benny's only sibling, Herman Smith, lives in Clifton Forge with his wife, Nancy. Benny graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1957, and married Barbara Campbell that same year. They were married 48 years before her death on December 27, 2005. Benny and Barbara are survived by three children: Paige Smith Kern of Glasgow, Virginia; Julie Smith Dumford and her husband Warren of Mooresville, North Carolina; and Craig Smith of Richmond, Virginia. Benny has six grandchildren: Joshua Smith of St. Augustine, Florida; Beth Jones and her partner Mike Glass of Roanoke, Virginia; Jordan Dumford and his wife Heather of Mooresville, North Carolina; Matthew Kern of Eagle Rock, Virginia; Wesley Dumford and his wife Meredith of Mooresville, North Carolina; and Whitney Dumford of Montreat, North Carolina. He also has three great-grandchildren: Paiton, Bennett, and Michael (and one great-grandson on the way). Benny was a chemist in the rubber Industry for 45 years. The highlight of his career was the patent he received in 2001 for a process he developed to improve the vulcanization of fabric for seat belts, airbags, and similar applications. There will be a visitation for North Carolina family and friends at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville, North Carolina, on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Visitation for Virginia family and friends will be held at Nicely Funeral Home in Clifton Forge, Virginia, on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A celebration of Benny’s life with be held on Thursday, February 9, 2017, at 1:00 pm at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with interment immediately following at Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations go to the Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org.
