Obituary for Jeanne Crabill

Jeanne Hilley Crabill, 93, of the Colonnades of Charlottesville and formerly of Horseshoe Bend, Clifton Forge, passed with peace and grace at the Colonnades on September 26, 2017. She was predeceased by her loving husband Ralph in 2007. Jeanne was born in Wilson, NC on June 29, 1924 to Dr Howard and Maggie Hilley. She attended Atlantic Christian College and was a graduate of Duke University. Upon graduation she moved to Richmond, Va to work as a Chemist for DuPont. There she met Ralph, a dental student, who she married in 1948. Ralph moved his practice to Clifton Forge in 1951 where for the next 45 years they made their home. Jeanne dedicated herself to creating a wonderful home environment for the care and well being and restoration of her family. She devoted countless hours of service over the years to multiple local clubs and community and civic organizations. She served on the Boards of the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center and the Alleghany Highlands Services Board, and was an Officer of the First Christian Church. Jeanne was a member of the bridge, garden and SCAT clubs. She was instrumental in establishing the Clifton Forge Public Library. Her intellect and appetite for learning were unrivaled. Our dearly beloved Mother and loving wife to our father will be remembered as having lived a life of excellence filled with a warm presence of selfless devotion and service. She was a Lady. We find our comfort in knowing that she is now in the presence of our Lord and Savior! In addition to her parents and husband, Jeanne was preceded in death by a brother and sister.Jeanne is survived by 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Dale Morrison of Charlotte, North Carolina, Frankie and Phil Denton of Winston Salem, North Carolina, Tuck and Chris Carter of Charlottesville, Virginia and 2 sons and daughter-in-law, Lee and Kim Crabill of Reisterstown, Maryland and Howard Crabill of Lexington, Virginia and 10 grandchildren, David Morrison, Lucy Morrison, Phillip Denton (Jordan), Lee Denton (Katie), Ellen Denton, Trey Crabill (Catherine), Austin Crabill, Will Carter (Carrie), Maggie Carter Winzeler (Casey), Weyman Carter (Kristen), 9 great grandchildren, Christopher Carter, Wyatt Carter, Weyman Carter, Dilyn Carter, Caroline Carter, Greyson Carter, Jackson Denton, Clark Denton, Carter Winzeler, and a number of nieces and nephews. The Crabill family extends their heartfelt thanks to their Colonnades family who lovingly and tenderly cared for their mother for the past eleven years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to The Clifton Forge Public Library, 535 Church Street, Clifton Forge, VA 24422. Following a service at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, officiated by Reverend Glenn Clements on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 12:30 p.m., Mrs. Crabill will be interred in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge, Va.
