Obituary for
Grover Cleveland Thompson Jr.
Grover Cleveland “G. C.” Thompson, Jr., age 81, formerly of Eagle Rock, and more recently of Friendship Manor, Roanoke, died Friday, November 23, 2007 at Friendship Manor. Born November 26, 1925 in Rockbridge County (Greenlee, VA), he was a son of the late Grover Cleveland Thompson, Sr. and Ida May Wright Thompson. He served in the United States Army with the occupation forces during World War II, in the Pacific Theatre. He first became involved in the farming business with his father, G. C. Thompson, Sr. and continued farming throughout his life with his son Richard until 1986, when he retired. His farming ventures first included beef cattle and hybrid seed corn and later dairy cattle with Richard. He served on the board of directors for the Roanoke Hollins Stock Yard. He was a charter member of the Eagle Rock Ruritan Club, a bank director for both Dominion Bank and Bank of Fincastle, and a member of the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors. He was also a member of Galatia Presbyterian Church, where he was Sunday School Superintendent and a church Elder, as well as Elder Emeritus. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Dew Thompson in June of 2007, and three sisters, Eleanor Piland, Catherine Traylor, and Anna Stinnett. He is survived by a daughter, Donna Thompson and her husband Fred Williamson of Greenwood, SC, two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Debbie Thompson of Richmond, and Richard and Robin Thompson of Eagle Rock, two brothers, Arthur Thompson of Birmingham, AL, and Howard L. Thompson of Roanoke, seven grandchildren, Paul Thompson, Ashley Thompson, Jeremy Thompson, Derick Williamson, Kristin Lewis and husband Jason, Andy Thompson, and Brian Thompson and wife Jennifer, one great granddaughter, Emily Thompson and a number of nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 26, 2007 at 11:00 AM in the Galatia Presbyterian Church at Gala, Eagle Rock, with Reverend Robert McRae officiating. Interment will take place in Galatia Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Mr. Thompson’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:30 PM at the church. Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge is handling arrangements.
